ABSTRACT

“ING1004 – Challenges in Engineering” is a required course for first-year engineering students created and taught by the School of Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. This course teaches students an engineering design process for investigating and solving real-world problems. Students apply concepts of design, creative thinking, and teamwork to identify opportunities and develop innovative products related to a predefined subject of interest. This article presents the evolution of ING1004 over its 15 years of existence, a time that can be divided into three general stages according to modifications in coordination, evaluation methods, and teaching methods, among others. This case study provides a foundation for others interested in implementing a general cornerstone course on engineering design that applies PROBLEM BASED LEARNING and PROJECT BASED LEARNING.
